Greg Shoults Coach - 1985 to 1993
Greg Shoults enters the Hall of Fame as the winningest coach in the history of the Cuyahoga Falls High School soccer program as his teams compiled an overall record of 110-41-19 and a Metro League Record of 82-13-13 from 1985 to 1993. Coach Shoults has spent a total of 36 years in the coaching ranks as an assistant and head coach for Cuyahoga Falls, Walsh, Hudson, Medina Highland, Nordonia and Copley High schools. Additionally, Coach Shoults has contributed to the Greater Akron Soccer Community as a referee at the youth and high school levels for many years.
As Coach Shoults recalls his time as a Black Tiger his key memories include the 4-0 victory over Glen Oak for District Championship in 1985, a 3-2 victory over Hudson, as his first win in 1985, his impressive record vs, rival Stow 7-5-6 and when his 1990 team Defeated Brecksville in PKs, marking the biggest upset in program history to date, as Brecksville was ranked first in the state and went on the win back to back state titles in 1991 and 1992 with the same team.
Former player Dino McIntyre remarked, “Greg cared about the kids that he coached. He was very involved and very aware back then. That is the most important thing that I remember about him, what a good man he was and how genuinely he cared for us. I remember his first year, he bought us new Erima uniforms (top, shorts, socks) out of his own pocket, had his mother stitch logos & numbers on them, I remember us guys being so proud to wear that uniform.
Former Player and current Hall of Famer David Wells wrote: “I was fortunate to play under Greg for my entire CFHS career where our team broke records and set standards for our program. It was his leadership and dedication to the game and school that made this possible. However, his impact goes much deeper. My game and many alumni that played before and after were coached and developed with Greg’s youth teams. I played for Greg since 4th grade along with our senior leaders that eventually led us to the District championship before losing in the State quarterfinals. Greg’s technical coaching style and ability to mentor his students was remarkable. Through his own hard work and dedication, Greg learned the game and became a true advocate to me and my teammates. Our youth team (Cuyahoga Falls Strikers / Breakfast Optimist Club) went from a bunch of beginners to the most dominate team in the Akron area. Greg was instrumental in coaching, organizing, and motivating. Greg taught us by showing and demonstrating the aspects and nuances of the game. More importantly, this included close friendships and family bonds that still exist today. Greg and a handful of parents made sure we stayed together, practiced and succeeded as a team. Without the dedication of this group led by Greg, we would have never succeeded. “
