Todd Hartong Player/Coach/Ambassador - Graduating Class of 1990
During Todd’s high school soccer career, he was a two-year letter winner and was a key member of the 1988 and 1989 teams that earned Metro League Championships and were the most successful in the history of the program. During his senior season, Todd was the lone returning starter after graduating a historic class the year before. Under Todd’s leadership on the field, the Black Tigers surprised many by winning the Metro League crown and amassing a league-record of 10-0-2, and 16-2-3 overall followed by a deep run into the state tournament before finally being defeated by Mayfield in the regional semifinals.
After graduating in 1990, Todd continued his soccer career at Malone College where he was a four-year starter. During his time at Malone, Todd was selected team captain twice and his teams appear in the NCCAA National Tournaments in 1991, 1992, and 1993. Todd was named an Adidas Scholar Athlete in 1992 and 1993, he earned Academic All-Ohio and NCCAA Scholar Athlete honors in 1992 and he set the Malone College record for the most games played in a career with 94 appearances across four seasons.
After finishing his education at Malone, Todd returned this alma mater as a coach. He was the JV coach from 1995 to 1997 and then took over as the varsity head coach in 1998 until 2005. During his tenure as head coach Todd raised the bar for personal and team expectations. He invested heavily in players character and the overall character of the team, and that investment paid off with two of his teams being ranked in the top 10 in the state of Ohio and his players achieving at an incredibly high level in the classroom.
After Todd concluded his run as head coach – he shifted his attention to what is perhaps his greatest legacy when he took over as the president of the Cuyahoga Falls Alumni Soccer Association in 2005 and he continues to hold today. During his presidency, Todd was instrumental in CFASA’s attaining IRS recognition as charitable nonprofit organization, he oversaw the creation of the CFASA website, he has helped expand the membership, and he has been constant promoter of fundraising activities in support of the Cuyahoga Falls Soccer Community. Under his leadership – CFASA has been able to cover the pay to participate fees for our student athletes for 17 years, host youth soccer camps to help inspire the next generations of Cuyahoga Falls soccer players and provide much needed financial support to our community teams with the hope of keeping the rich history of Cuyahoga Falls soccer alive and well.
Todd would like to extend a note of thanks to his parents for being super fans all through his soccer years and to his sons for developing a love for the game that we all share. Todd says, I would also like to thank my teammates. I was never one of the best of players, but I was always surrounded by amazing talent and many of these teammates have become life-long friends through the years. I would also like to thank all the young men who played soccer for me while I was coaching. It was a joy to watch their development and even a bigger joy to become friends with some of them later in life. And finally, I would like to thank my co-conspirators with CFASA. While I serve in the role of president, this organization would not be successful without the men who dedicate themselves to our mission of supporting the Cuyahoga Falls Soccer community.
